  • The following appeared on 6 August 1898 in the Niagara Falls Gazette: Early yesterday [sic] morning George Koelle, a respected resident of this city, died at his home on Whirlpool Avenue. Death came with surprising suddenness for the deceased had been ill but two days. He was in good health and attended to his work at the Pettebone-Cataract Paper Company mill until Wednesday morning when he took suddenly ill and was forced to take his bed.
         George Koelle was about 50 years of age. He was born in Wurtemburg, Germany, and came to this country with his family about 30 years ago, taking up his home in the village of Suspension Bridge. For 26 years he has been in the employ of the Pettebone-Cataract Paper Company. He was widely known and a large circle of friends will mourn his loss. Besides being a member of Niagara Falls Lodge No. 81, I. O. O. F., he was a member of the German-American Society and Whirlpool Lodge No. 19, A. O. U. W. His widow, three sons and five daughters survive. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. J. H. Asbeck, pastor of the German Zion Lutheran Church will officiate and the interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery. The societies of which the deceased was a member will attend the services, which will be under the auspices of the Odd Fellows, and the members of Lodge No. 81 are requested to meet at 1 o'clock at their parlors in the Fink Block.
